Made possible by a significant \$375-million investment – \$300 million from the Government of Canada and \$75 million from philanthropic partners – this historic initiative will change the course of health care for Canadians. The project aims to help facilitate Indigenous-led stewardship and conservation in the NWT’s pristine ecosystems, including its vast boreal forests and tundra. And additionally, it is going to provide hundreds of productive, culturally enriching jobs for the communities where they will be sited.NWT: Our Land for the Future aims to conserve and manage up to 380,000 square kilometers of land and inland water, accounting for nearly 30% of the Northwest Territories. This expansive region covers more than 2% of Canada’s total land area, safeguarding newly designated terrestrial and freshwater zones. The initiative spans an area nearly seven times the size of Nova Scotia, highlighting its profound environmental and cultural significance.Several key activities and initiatives will be supported by this funding:Indigenous Guardians: A core component of the initiative, the program will provide resources to support the operations, recruitment, and career development of Indigenous Guardians. These Guardians will monitor the health of the land, protect cultural sites, and ensure the sustainability of local species and ecosystems. This initiative will strengthen the capacity of Indigenous communities to protect their traditional lands while empowering future generations with the skills and resources needed for environmental stewardship.Protected Areas and IPCAs: The initiative will facilitate the establishment and management of new and existing Protected Areas, Conserved Areas, and Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs). These spaces will be essential in preserving the ecological integrity of the NWT, offering protection to critical wildlife habitats and culturally significant areas. The creation of IPCAs will also give Indigenous communities direct governance over their traditional territories, ensuring that conservation is aligned with cultural values.Climate Action: A central focus of this initiative is addressing the impact of climate change. The funding will support a range of activities, including research, impact assessments, and climate adaptation strategies. These efforts will focus on understanding how the changing climate is affecting the NWT’s ecosystems and exploring ways to mitigate these impacts, ensuring that the region remains resilient in the face of environmental challenges.Climate Action: A central focus of this initiative is addressing the impact of climate change. This initiative, one of the world’s largest Indigenous-led land conservation efforts, will foster sustainable development, create hundreds of meaningful jobs, and help protect the NWT’s vast and unique ecosystems. It is a testament to the power of Indigenous leadership in environmental protection and cultural preservation. By focusing on locally driven, community-based conservation practices, the initiative ensures that economic growth and environmental sustainability go hand in hand.Along the way, NWT: Our Land for the Future will be leading the way in demonstrating how region-specific culture-dependent approaches to land stewardship can work best for both the environment and the people who live on it. With this initiative, we are creating a model of large-scale conservation that emphasizes ecological protection, climate resilience and economic opportunity, so that the Northwest Territories continues to be a vibrant, sustainable place for generations to come.
