A historic Letter of Intent has been signed to serve as an overarching commitment and framework for the collective repackaging and renewing of the dimension of Sustainable Tourism Goals (STGs) to be embraced by the tourism sector in the country by year 2030. This milestone agreement, which has been formalized with today’s signing, represents a major leap forward for the development of Thailand’s tourism industry, ensuring that growth is planned in accordance with sustainable operations, environmental conservation and social responsibility.As part of the TAT’s broader Strategic Direction 2026, the letter reflects a shared ambition to transform Thailand into a global leader in sustainable tourism, with a focus on harmonizing economic growth with environmental protection, social inclusivity, and robust governance practices. By embracing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and tailoring them to the specific needs of the tourism sector, this initiative paves the way for a future where tourism contributes positively to both the economy and the environment.The 21 signatory organizations include eight government agencies that are critical to the national effort. These agencies are the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Department of Tourism (DOT), the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO), the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), and the Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO). Each of these entities plays a crucial role in creating an environment conducive to the growth of sustainable tourism, by aligning their policies and practices with the STGs.The private sector and civil society also have an important role to play in the advancement of this initiative. Thirteen leading organizations, including the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT), Thai Hotels Association (THA), Thai Ecotourism and Adventure Travel Association (TEATA), Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), Thailand Incentive and Convention Association (TICA), and the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation, are also signatories. High-profile private entities such as Central Group, Asset World Corporation (AWC), Minor International, The Mall Group, Siam Piwat, One Bangkok, and Dusit Thani have also come forward to lend their support, helping to drive the transformation from within the tourism industry itself.The agreement sets forth a comprehensive framework that will guide the development and implementation of strategies for the period 2026-2027, with an overarching goal to meet the STGs by 2030. This framework encompasses a wide range of initiatives, from emissions reduction and resource efficiency to the protection of biodiversity and the establishment of better management standards. Central to these efforts will be the inclusion of equity and local participation, ensuring that all stakeholders, particularly local communities, have a voice in the process.The partners are committed to transforming Thailand’s tourism sector into a model of sustainability, focusing on the balance between growth and responsibility. This national coalition envisions a tourism industry that promotes environmental conservation, social equality, and economic stability, contributing to the SDGs in meaningful and measurable ways. For example, TAT will help tourism businesses obtain sustainability certifications by offering resources like the STGs STAR platform, the Carbon Footprint Hotels Platform, and the Thailand Tourism Awards. These tools will enable businesses to assess their environmental impact and work towards more sustainable practices, ultimately contributing to Thailand’s reputation as a top-tier sustainable destination.The Department of Tourism (DOT) will spearhead the Thailand Green Plan 2030, focusing on green initiatives that promote sustainable tourism at a national level. Additionally, DOT will support international certifications, such as the Thailand Good Travel Seal, aiming to upgrade at least 100 tourism sites to meet these high standards by 2030. The Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE) will work closely with hotels in Phuket to elevate them to the Green Hotel Plus status, further advancing Thailand’s environmental objectives and demonstrating the country’s commitment to green tourism.The signing of this landmark agreement reflects a commitment to long-term, sustainable growth in Thailand’s tourism sector.
