This vision received a significant boost with the successful organisation of the Global Coffee and Tea Association Forum 2025 from July 17 to 20. The event was a critical one in the city’s ongoing campaign to define its future as a world capital of coffee and tea tourism. The Forum: A Milestone in Coffee and Tea TourismThe Global Coffee and Tea Association Forum 2025 was a landmark event that combined insightful presentations, interactive discussions, dynamic exhibitions, and immersive site visits. The forum attracted 211 delegates, including 165 from Thailand and 46 international participants from 11 countries and regions, including Australia, Cambodia, Mainland China, Colombia, Denmark, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Japan, Singapore, and Vietnam. The forum was not just a gathering for professionals but also an opportunity for cultural exchange, networking, and business development, driving the growth of Chiang Rai’s burgeoning tea and coffee sectors.During the event, industry experts participated in knowledge exchanges, while also visiting local plantations, processing facilities, and enjoying tastings that gave them a firsthand look at Chiang Rai’s exceptional agricultural products. These site visits proved to be a valuable opportunity for international delegates to connect with local producers and explore opportunities for collaboration and growth within the tea and coffee industries.Collaborations and Institutional SupportThe success of the forum was bolstered by strong collaborations between various organizations. The event was supported by the Tea and Coffee Institute of Mae Fah Luang University, Singha Park Chiang Rai Co., Ltd., and the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB). These institutions have worked together to create an environment conducive to growing the region’s agricultural tourism sector, highlighting Chiang Rai as a global leader in both coffee and tea production.Following in the footsteps of two successful tea and coffee symposia held in 2023 and 2024, the forum’s focus was on showcasing the city’s agricultural strengths and transforming it into a destination for coffee and tea enthusiasts from around the world.Site Visits Highlighting Local Agricultural ExcellenceOne of the key highlights of the forum was the “A Cup to Village” site visits, which gave delegates a unique opportunity to explore Chiang Rai’s renowned tea and coffee plantations. Another key stop was Wang Put Tan Tea in Doi Mae Salong, which demonstrated the positive impact of high-quality Oolong and Black Tea production on community transformation. The plantation’s Oolong tea won the Grand Gold Prize at the 2021 World Green Tea Contest, offering a chance to experience firsthand the expertise behind its globally recognized products. In addition to tea, the forum also showcased Doi Chaang Coffee in Mae Suai, a successful coffee plantation that has gained recognition for its unique Arabica coffee. Initially introduced as part of the 1969 Royal Project aimed at replacing slash-and-burn farming, Doi Chaang Coffee has become a premium brand known for its distinctive aroma. The farm’s success has been supported by academic collaboration and its recognition through EU certification. Delegates had the chance to participate in a cupping session with the “Queen of Coffee,” a unique and enriching experience for all involved.Strengthening Chiang Rai’s Position on the Global MICE MapThe forum’s success is part of a broader strategy by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) to diversify Thailand’s event destinations and boost the competitiveness of cities across the country on the global MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) stage. The Acting President of TCEB, Mr. Puripan, emphasized how Chiang Rai’s tea and coffee heritage played a central role in attracting international events like the forum, helping to strengthen the city’s position as a leading destination for MICE tourism.Looking Ahead: Chiang Rai’s Future as a Coffee and Tea Tourism DestinationThe successful staging of Global Coffee and Tea Association Forum 2025 marks a monumental achievement for Chiang Rai as a budding coffee and tea tourism destination on the world map. The city also has a rich agricultural history, and an increasing status as a home for superior products, so much more international attention, and investment is likely in the years ahead. As Thailand grows its reputation as an agricultural tourism destination, and with a focus on sustainability, community engagement, and top-end production, Chiang Rai is set to become an even more prominent blip on the world’s agriculture and tourism map.
