This surge in tourism activity contributed to total income reaching 73.5 million euros, a 22.2% rise, while income from accommodation alone rose by 26.9% to 54 million euros. These figures reflect a solid growth trajectory for the region’s tourism economy, driven by increasing demand for the island’s accommodations and attractions.The hotel sector, which remains a key player in Madeira’s tourism industry, accounted for 66% of the overnight stays in April, totaling 721,300. This segment saw a year-on-year growth of 6.7%. Meanwhile, vacation rentals experienced an impressive 26% increase, making up 31.5% of the total overnight stays. The rural tourism sector, although smaller, also contributed to the overall growth, rising by 11.1% to account for 2.5% of the total overnight stays.To ensure comparability with the data published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), which includes national data, DREM clarifies that it excludes local accommodations with fewer than 10 beds when calculating guest and overnight stay variables. However, other data points align with those published by INE, ensuring consistency across reports.One of the key indicators of the region’s tourism performance is the net occupancy rate in tourist accommodations. In April, the net occupancy rate per bed was 70.3%, which marked an increase of 1.5 percentage points from 68.8% in the same month of 2024. This uptick reflects an efficient use of the available accommodation capacity in the region. Similarly, the occupancy rate per room reached 80.4%, up from 78.3% in April 2024, further indicating the strong demand for Madeira’s accommodations during the month.The average length of stay in tourist accommodation for the month of April was 4.51 nights, which remained consistent with the same period last year. The highest average stays were recorded in hotels and vacation rentals, highlighting the continued preference of visitors for longer stays in these types of accommodations.In terms of source markets, the top 10 countries accounted for 80.4% of the total overnight stays in Madeira for April. Germany emerged as the largest market, contributing 19.4% of the total overnight stays. This represented a 5.6% increase compared to April 2024, reaffirming Germany’s significance as a primary source market for Madeira’s tourism. Portugal ranked second, accounting for 16.7% of the total overnight stays. The Portuguese market saw a notable increase of 39.9%, which allowed it to surpass the United Kingdom in the rankings for the first time since August 2023. The British market accounted for 14.5% of the total overnight stays, experiencing a modest 2.1% increase compared to the same month in the previous year. France and Poland followed, contributing 9.7% and 5.9% of the total overnight stays, respectively.The revenue figures for Madeira’s tourism sector were equally impressive. The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) for all tourist accommodations was approximately 101.33 euros, representing a 24% increase compared to the same month in 2024. This growth in RevPAR is a strong indicator of the rising quality of accommodation offerings and the increasing willingness of tourists to spend on their stays in Madeira.Looking beyond April, the first four months of 2025 have also shown positive growth for Madeira’s tourism industry. DREM reported that the total number of guests in tourist accommodation from January to April reached 697,500, which represents a 7.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The number of overnight stays also saw a 9% rise, reaching approximately 3.7 million stays in the first quarter of the year. These figures reflect a positive start to the year for Madeira, with strong demand across both the hotel sector and other forms of tourist accommodation.This surge in tourism activity comes as the island of Madeira continues to enhance its infrastructure, offering new and exciting experiences to visitors.
