With a significant 30% increase in foreign arrivals compared to the same period in 2024, Vietnam has firmly established itself as a top destination in the Asia-Pacific region. Notably, it outperformed neighboring countries such as Japan and the Republic of Palau, securing its position as the regional leader in tourism growth.Global Tourism RecoveryThe World Tourism Barometer (WBT), released in May by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), highlighted Vietnam’s robust recovery in international tourism. The country ranked second globally in terms of recovery, with international arrivals up by 34% compared to pre-pandemic figures from 2019. This positive trend also contributed to Vietnam’s impressive year-on-year tourism revenue growth of 29%, positioning it fourth in terms of global tourism revenue growth. In the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam recorded over 6 million international arrivals, setting a new record for quarterly visits. By the end of May, this figure had risen to 9.2 million, reflecting a 21% increase compared to the previous year and a 15% growth compared to May 2019. This surge in tourism marks Vietnam’s successful efforts to attract international visitors in a post-pandemic world.International Tourism TrendsGlobally, tourism continued to flourish despite various challenges. According to the UNWTO report, over 300 million international tourist arrivals were recorded in the first quarter, marking a 5% increase over the previous year and a 3% rise compared to the same period in 2019. These figures demonstrate that, despite geopolitical tensions and inflationary pressures affecting travel costs, international tourism is on a steady growth path.Europe emerged as the largest global destination in the first quarter, with more than 125 million visitors, a 2% increase from 2024. In contrast, the Middle East and the Americas saw more modest growth of 1% and 2%, respectively. Asia-Pacific experienced the highest growth rate, with international arrivals rising by 12%, further solidifying the region as a key player in the global tourism market.Regional Tourism RecoveryWhen compared to pre-pandemic levels, the Middle East showed the most significant recovery, surpassing 2019 figures by 44%. Africa also experienced strong growth, recovering 44% of its pre-pandemic tourism numbers. Europe followed with a 5% recovery, while the Asia-Pacific region, although still catching up, reached 91% of its tourism levels from 2019.Tourism Spending and Growth ForecastIn terms of economic impact, global tourism receipts are projected to reach a record $1.7 trillion by the end of 2024, marking a 15% increase from 2019. The average spending per tourist has also seen an upward shift, with tourists now spending an average of $1,170 per trip, compared to the pre-pandemic figure of $1,000. This increase in spending reflects a broader trend toward more expensive travel experiences and longer stays.Despite ongoing global uncertainties, the UNWTO has maintained its growth forecast of 3% to 5% for international tourism in 2025, indicating a resilient global tourism industry. Vietnam’s continued success in the tourism sector is a testament to its comprehensive recovery efforts.Vietnam’s Strategic Tourism InitiativesThe Vietnam National Administration of Tourism attributes the country’s impressive performance to the combined efforts of various stakeholders within the tourism sector. These efforts have included the development of innovative tourism policies, the implementation of promotional strategies, and the introduction of tourism stimulus programs. These initiatives have played a pivotal role in revitalizing the tourism industry. The Vietnamese government has also introduced several key measures to enhance the country’s appeal to international travelers, including more open visa policies. These efforts have not only streamlined the travel process but have also made Vietnam an increasingly attractive destination for foreign tourists, contributing to the country’s ongoing tourism recovery and growth.«Enjoyed this post?
