Vietnam’s tourism industry reached an unprecedented milestone in the first five months of 2025, attracting over 9.2 million foreign travelers a groundbreaking figure fueled by a sharp rise in visitor numbers from China, India, and countries across Southeast Asia. This remarkable 21.3% year-on-year increase reflects Vietnam’s strategic efforts to expand air connectivity, ease visa access, and intensify overseas promotions, positioning the country as one of Asia’s most dynamic and desirable travel destinations.
Vietnam Welcomes Over Nine Million International Tourists in Early 2025 Amid Rising Demand from Asia and Europe
Vietnam’s tourism industry is off to a strong start in 2025, with international arrivals exceeding 9.2 million during the first five months of the year. This figure represents a 21.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024, reflecting the country’s growing appeal among global travelers. In May 2025, Vietnam welcomed approximately 1.53 million foreign tourists, reflecting a notable 10.5% increase compared to the same month in the previous year.
Air Travel Dominates Entry Modes
Air travel remains the primary mode of arrival for international tourists in Vietnam. Between January and May 2025, approximately 85.2% of travelers entered the country by air. Land routes accounted for 12.9% of total arrivals, while sea travel contributed the remaining 1.9%. Vietnam’s strategic location in Southeast Asia and its expanding network of international flight connections continue to make it easily accessible for travelers from around the world.
Top Contributing Markets: China and South Korea Lead International Arrivals
China maintained its position as the largest source of international tourists to Vietnam, with 2.36 million visitors, accounting for 25.7% of the total. South Korea ranked second with more than 1.9 million visitors, accounting for 20.7% of all international arrivals to Vietnam.
Other significant contributors to Vietnam’s inbound tourism during this period included Taiwan (533,000), the United States (375,000), Japan (342,000), Cambodia (325,000), India (272,000), Australia (241,000), Malaysia (221,000), and Russia (210,000). Notably, Russia emerged as Vietnam’s top European market, signaling growing interest from the region despite geopolitical challenges.
Strong Growth from Southeast Asia and Emerging Markets
Vietnam’s tourism sector benefited from remarkable growth in several Southeast Asian markets. The Philippines saw the most substantial increase at 104.3%, followed by Cambodia with 64.8% and Laos with 39.8%. Neighboring nations like Indonesia (11.6%), Thailand (4.1%), Malaysia (2.9%), and Singapore (2.6%) also recorded steady growth, highlighting the resilience and vitality of intra-ASEAN tourism.
India continued its upward trajectory, cementing its position as one of Vietnam’s most promising tourism markets. The nation experienced a substantial rise in visitor numbers, with arrivals climbing by 38.3% Australia also posted a solid growth rate of 13.1%, while Japan and the United States saw moderate gains of 18.3% and 7.2%, respectively. However, South Korea experienced a slight decline of 2.4%, indicating the need for renewed engagement in that market.
Visa-Free and Short-Term Exemption Markets Fuel Inbound Tourism
Vietnam’s visa policies continue to play a significant role in driving tourism. Countries benefitting from the unilateral visa exemption program recorded steady growth. Among them, France saw a 19.8% rise in visitors, while the United Kingdom posted a 19.5% increase. Other European markets also performed well, with Germany up 16.1%, Italy 24.7%, Spain 10.3%, Denmark 10.9%, Sweden 15.1%, and Norway 14.3%.
Russia’s resurgence was particularly striking, with a 121.1% jump compared to the same period in 2024, reaffirming its importance to Vietnam’s tourism recovery from Europe.
Meanwhile, countries enjoying short-term visa exemptions under the 2025 Tourism Promotion Program also showed promising growth. Poland experienced a notable 44.5% surge in tourist arrivals, while Switzerland posted a steady growth of 10.7% during the same period.
Boosting Global Visibility Through Tourism Campaigns
To capitalize on this momentum, the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT) has been intensifying its global outreach. In May 2025, VNAT launched promotional campaigns in France, Italy, and Switzerland. These initiatives were complemented by Vietnam’s participation in the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, where the country highlighted its tourism offerings and cinematic landscape to a global audience.
The promotion campaign will continue in June 2025, with Vietnam set to organize events in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany. These efforts aim to enhance Vietnam’s visibility in European markets and attract a diverse range of visitors looking for culture, nature, and authentic experiences.
Outlook for the Rest of 2025
Vietnam’s tourism industry is poised for continued growth throughout the rest of 2025, bolstered by favorable visa policies, targeted international promotions, and rising demand from Asian and European markets. With an increasing number of flight connections, improved infrastructure, and a diverse tourism offering, Vietnam remains one of Asia’s most attractive travel destinations.
