August 29, 2025Vung Tau’s iconic Bai Sau Beach, long considered the heart of the coastal city’s tourism scene, has undergone a stunning transformation, ushering in a new era for both locals and visitors. Once a cluttered, over-commercialized beach plagued by vendors, litter, and chaotic crowds, the area now offers a spacious, well-maintained environment that attracts tourists seeking a clean, relaxed, and scenic destination.Situated along Thuy Van Street, Bai Sau stretches nearly 4 kilometers, boasting a gently sloping coastline that invites swimmers, joggers, and cyclists to enjoy the beauty of the beach. In late August, the scene was a stark contrast to the past, as the beach buzzed with activity, featuring families walking along the paved park path, children playing, and locals engaging in a variety of outdoor activities. This transformation has not only brought joy to residents but has also opened the beach to tourists in an entirely new way, with facilities designed for comfort and ease. The Struggles Behind the RevivalFor decades, Bai Sau had been marred by commercial exploitation. Seafood vendors, food stalls, and street vendors created a chaotic environment, leading to littering and a lack of proper beach management. To combat this, the Vung Tau City government initiated a beach clean-up campaign in 2016, which aimed to ban activities like trading, cooking, and drinking on the sand. This move was met with resistance from local businesses worried about the impact on their income. However, over time, the city worked to convince all stakeholders that a clean, well-maintained beach would enhance the tourism experience and provide long-term benefits for both the community and local enterprises. The transformation of Bai Sau beach did not come easy. For years, access to the beach was restricted by solid concrete fences that divided the area into separate sections, making it difficult for residents and visitors to freely enjoy the shoreline. The government took bold steps to reclaim more than 28 hectares of land and redevelop the area, ensuring the beach was accessible to all. The project, however, involved complex legal and financial issues, which slowed the redevelopment process.A Strategic RevitalizationIn 2021, the Ba Ria – Vung Tau People’s Committee took action to reclaim the land from private businesses that had long exploited the area. After securing the necessary clearances, the government began the renovation in 2023, which saw the dismantling of temporary fences, bamboo structures, and deteriorating thatched roofs. The reclaimed space was then redesigned to enhance the visitor experience, including the addition of modern amenities such as parking lots, rest areas, public toilets, and fresh-water showers. The project aimed to provide convenience for tourists and locals alike, ensuring a seamless beach experience. The nearly 1,100 billion VND investment in Bai Sau’s revitalization has brought positive results, transforming the area into an inviting public space. Former city officials and architects praised the project for its focus on creating a sustainable and welcoming environment for all. By cleaning up the beach and offering a wide array of modern amenities, the government has laid the foundation for Bai Sau to reclaim its status as one of Vung Tau’s premier tourist destinations.Modern Amenities for a Thriving Beach DestinationThe newly renovated Bai Sau Beach now features a coastal park with well-maintained, paved walkways that stretch along the shoreline. Spacious squares and modern service stations equipped with state-of-the-art sanitation systems ensure that visitors enjoy a comfortable experience. For added convenience, pedestrian tunnels have been constructed to improve access across Thuy Van Street, making it easier for tourists to explore the area without worrying about traffic.Architect Ngo Viet Nam Son, an expert in the development of tourism spaces, emphasized that Bai Sau’s transformation should also consider the transportation needs of tourists. With a beach of this scale, walking can be exhausting, and therefore, a cycling route along the coast with strategically placed stops and parking areas would improve accessibility. Additionally, the implementation of a public tram line running along the coast would provide tourists with an effortless way to explore the entire beach.Further into the future, Son suggests the potential of a metro line connecting Vung Tau to Ho Chi Minh City, which would undoubtedly boost tourism and provide easier access for both locals and international visitors. In the meantime, he proposes a rapid bus service that directly connects the beach to the city center, which would ease traffic congestion, especially during weekends and holidays.A Sustainable Future for Bai Sau BeachWhile the renovation of Bai Sau Beach has made significant progress, there are still ongoing challenges. To ensure the beach’s long-term sustainability as a major tourist destination, there needs to be a comprehensive plan for its management and development. Son emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships (PPP) in creating a vibrant, attractive space that benefits both tourists and the local community. The use of social resources and careful planning will enable Bai Sau Beach to continue growing as a premier destination. The renovation of Bai Sau marks an exciting turning point for Vung Tau, which is becoming increasingly recognized as an attractive destination for both domestic and international travelers. With its new facilities, beautiful coastal park, and modern infrastructure, Bai Sau is poised to become an even more prominent part of Vung Tau’s tourism offering. The careful planning and investment made by the government and stakeholders ensure that the beach’s future is both bright and sustainable.[Source: VN Express; Image Credit: Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism]
