Anchored along the rapidly developing Middle Corridor, the country is fast becoming a linchpin in east-west supply chains, supported by an ambitious wave of infrastructure development and global cooperation.Major investments in rail, road, aviation, and maritime infrastructure are enabling Kazakhstan to unlock its full logistics potential. With transit cargo volumes projected to soar to 100 million tons annually by 2030, the nation is rewriting the blueprint for international freight connectivity.Momentum Fueled by Economic Growth and Trade AmbitionsKazakhstan’s economic landscape has strengthened significantly, with GDP expanding by 6% in early 2025—the strongest growth the country has seen in over a decade. Much of this growth stems from strategic sectors such as construction, industrial output, and, crucially, logistics and transport services. The government sees international connectivity not only as a commercial necessity but as a pillar for sustainable long-term development.Transit activity saw a notable increase in 2024, with total cargo volumes rising by 7.1% to reach 34.6 million tons. Rail handled the lion’s share—27.5 million tons—while road transport accounted for 6.7 million tons. This upward trajectory is expected to accelerate, especially with Kazakhstan and China formalizing a high-impact agreement to increase container block trains from 600 to 3,000 annually by 2029.A Nexus of Global Trade CorridorsKazakhstan’s strategic importance is magnified by its location at the intersection of 13 international transport corridors. These routes connect China, Europe, Russia, South Asia, the Persian Gulf, and the Caspian region. The country plays a vital role in established and emerging networks such as TRACECA, the International North–South Transport Corridor, and the Middle Corridor—also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route—which offers a crucial alternative to traditional Asia–Europe trade routes.Infrastructure Overhaul Across All Transport ModesTo meet growing demand and expand its logistical footprint, Kazakhstan is undertaking a transformative infrastructure program. In 2025 alone, the country aims to modernize 13,000 kilometers of highways and 6,100 kilometers of railway lines. Six airports are currently under construction or undergoing renovation, while two major seaport expansion projects are underway.On the rail front, five large-scale projects valued at 2.3 trillion tenge are in motion to strengthen ties with China and Uzbekistan. Kazakhstan plans to modernize 11,000 kilometers of railway lines by 2029 as part of its sweeping effort to enhance national and regional rail connectivity. These improvements are expected to significantly reduce cargo transit times from major hubs such as Astana, Almaty, and Khorgos to the strategic Port of Aktau on the Caspian Sea. New corridors, including the “North” and “Sedmiddle” lines, will complement the existing Western Europe–Western China route, enhancing Kazakhstan’s position as a multimodal logistics leader.Road Projects Accelerate Domestic and Regional LinksIn parallel, Kazakhstan is upgrading 9,000 kilometers of roads to ensure seamless internal and regional connectivity. Out of this, 1,083 kilometers are actively being reconstructed, and another 847 kilometers are expected to be completed by the end of 2025. A highlight of these efforts is the “Center–West” highway, designed to cut the distance between Astana and Aktau by nearly 889 kilometers, offering a direct and efficient route for freight and passenger movement.Aviation Expansion to Boost Passenger and Cargo ThroughputKazakhstan’s air infrastructure is undergoing a major upgrade as part of its broader logistics vision. Three new airports are under construction, while multiple existing ones are being refurbished. By 2024, the nation had six domestic airlines operating 669 weekly flights across 57 domestic routes. Internationally, Kazakhstan is now connected to 31 countries through 119 direct routes. The global network is set to expand further in 2025, with new services to Rome, Munich, Budapest, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Busan. Direct flights to the United States are also expected by 2026.The national goal is to handle 65 million air passengers and 500,000 tons of air cargo annually by 2029. To support this capacity, Kazakhstan recently launched a private cargo airline equipped with three aircraft to strengthen air freight operations.Maritime Expansion Anchors Regional TradeKazakhstan’s maritime capabilities are also scaling rapidly. Dredging at the Port of Aktau will enhance vessel capacity, while the national merchant fleet will be expanded with 17 new vessels, including four ferries. The Port of Kuryk now hosts a one-million-ton grain terminal, while the newly operational Zarzha multifunctional terminal can process up to 11 million tons of cargo per year.June 2025 marked the inauguration of a state-of-the-art container facility in Aktau, elevating the port’s yearly transshipment capacity to 240,000 TEUs and reinforcing its role in Eurasian logistics. Kazakhstan has also extended its maritime reach with the opening of a new terminal at Georgia’s Poti Port and the development of strategic logistics hubs in Xi’an and Lianyungang (China), Seletino (Russia), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Alyat (Azerbaijan), and Hungary—further entrenching its influence across the East–West axis.A Unified Vision for Global ConnectivityKazakhstan’s logistics evolution goes beyond infrastructure. Institutions such as the Astana International Financial Center (AIFC) serve as key drivers in drawing international capital and advancing financial innovation within the trade and logistics sectors.
