Key deliberations on advancing cross-border tourism unfolded on June 21 in Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan, during the 15th annual convention and general body session of the Tour Operators Association of Assam.Held at the invitation of the Royal Bhutanese Consulate General in Guwahati, the event gathered approximately 100 association members along with Bhutanese tourism stakeholders, including tour operators, hoteliers, and officials, fostering deeper engagement and cross-border collaboration.The convention aimed to deepen tourism collaboration between Assam and Bhutan, with a special emphasis on positioning Bhutan’s eastern region as an attractive destination for Indian tourists. Both delegations recognized the significant, yet underutilized, opportunities in cross-border tourism and reaffirmed their dedication to building smooth and accessible travel routes across the shared border.During the event, the association unveiled a special edition of its newsletter, Tea Break, highlighting the tourism potential between the two regions. The publication also emphasized the value of joint efforts in advancing sustainable and mutually beneficial tourism development.In a renewed push for environmental conservation, the Indian government has introduced an enhanced version of the National Mission for Green India, targeting the revival of degraded forest ecosystems across key mountain regions including the Himalayas, the Western Ghats, and the Aravalli range.Launched in conjunction with the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, the revised mission prioritizes reforestation and ecological restoration in the arid zones of northwest India.During its initial phase, the initiative aims to restore ecological balance across 10 million hectares of land, boost forest-based livelihoods for approximately three million dependent households, and increase carbon sequestration by an estimated 50 to 60 million tonnes by the year 2020.The revitalized Green India Mission places a strong emphasis on restoring degraded landscapes across the Himalayan region by planting indigenous species. These efforts aim to curb soil erosion, reduce the risk of landslides, and enhance the region’s capacity for rainwater retention. Slope stabilization techniques such as gully plugging and contour trenching will be key tools in this process.In the Northeastern states, the mission addresses the challenges of shifting cultivation, or jhum farming, by introducing context-sensitive, sustainable agricultural practices that respect traditional knowledge while improving land productivity.To support both environmental and economic goals, the mission also encourages seabuckthorn cultivation in ecologically suitable areas like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Sikkim. These hardy shrubs not only help prevent soil degradation but also offer livelihood opportunities through their medicinal and commercial value.The Aravalli mountain range, among the oldest on Earth, plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by regulating climate and preserving water sources. However, unchecked deforestation, rampant mining, and urban sprawl have led to severe degradation, resulting in desertification, diminishing rainfall, and groundwater depletion.In response to growing ecological threats, the government has launched the Aravalli Green Wall initiative, aiming to establish a five-kilometre-wide stretch of greenery along the mountain range. This vegetative corridor is designed to shield the region from advancing desert winds, enhance groundwater replenishment, and reinforce the area’s long-term environmental sustainability.The mission also extends to safeguarding the Western Ghats, a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot spanning 1,600 kilometers from Gujarat to Tamil Nadu. Rich in endemic flora and fauna, the Western Ghats play a vital role in absorbing nearly 10 percent of India’s greenhouse gas emissions. By restoring forest cover and enhancing ecosystem services, the mission aims to preserve the ecological integrity of this region while supporting climate change mitigation efforts.
