The Thailand Safe Travel Stamp is part of a broader strategy by TAT to ensure that hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and other tourism operators meet high safety standards, reassuring travelers, particularly from China, that they can visit with confidence.The stamp will be awarded to eligible businesses by August, following the completion of a thorough screening process. A committee is set to be formed in July to finalize the selection and screening criteria. This will help ensure that only the most reliable and safe tourism operators are included in the initiative.This new certification effort builds on the earlier Sawasdee Nihao campaign, which ran from May 28 to June 1. Although the campaign aimed to reverse the decline in Chinese tourist arrivals, it had limited success. The initiative brought together 400 tourism agencies and 200 influential Chinese figures to promote Thailand as a safe destination. However, the campaign’s impact was not enough to stem the drop in visitors, which has been exacerbated by several high-profile incidents that have eroded Chinese tourists’ trust.There has been a noticeable decrease in Chinese arrivals, with a substantial decline in numbers recorded between January 1 and June 22, 2025. Only 2.17 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand during this period, which represents a 4.24% decrease compared to the previous year. Historically, Chinese visitors have been the largest group of inbound tourists to Thailand, but they are now being outnumbered by Malaysian tourists, who accounted for 2.19 million arrivals in the same period.In response to this decline, TAT has set an ambitious target of attracting 6.9 million Chinese tourists in 2025. This goal requires an additional 4.73 million visitors over the remaining months of the year, putting significant pressure on the industry to attract more tourists and rebuild confidence.Several incidents have contributed to the deterioration of Thailand’s image among Chinese tourists. The actor was lured to Thailand under the false premise of an audition and was then trafficked to a scam center in Myanmar. This incident was widely reported in the Chinese media and sparked widespread fear of cross-border crime and kidnapping, with the subsequent media coverage further damaging Thailand’s reputation.The backlash from this scandal was significant. The news quickly spread across Chinese social media, triggering mass cancellations, particularly during the Lunar New Year period, a traditionally busy travel time. The incident heightened concerns about safety and security in Thailand, leading to a further decline in Chinese tourist arrivals.In response, the Thailand Safe Travel Stamp will be awarded based on four key criteria to ensure the highest standards of safety and trustworthiness. These criteria include:Safety and security of the premisesSecure payment methodsThe capacity of staff to engage and communicate efficiently with international visitors.Accessibility and convenience of transportationTo qualify for the stamp, tourism operators must be legally registered businesses that comply with Thai tax regulations and adhere to the Safety and Health Administration (SHA) standards, which were introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic. These standards focus on health and safety protocols designed to protect both tourists and workers in the tourism sector.Thailand already has a robust network of over 50,000 SHA-certified venues spread across various business categories.
