US, India, and China Help Drive Thirteen Percent Growth in Nepal Tourism Sector, Welcoming Over One Million Tourists in 2024, Signaling a Strong Recovery Post-Pandemic

Saturday, July 5, 2025

In 2024, Nepal’s tourism sector experienced a remarkable surge, welcoming over one million tourists, with significant contributions from key markets such as the United States, India, and China. This increase of thirteen percent in tourism arrivals signals a robust recovery for the country’s travel industry, which had been severely impacted by the pandemic. The strong performance can be attributed to the steady rise in international visits from these nations, which have historically been major sources of tourism for Nepal. As global travel demand rebounds, Nepal has positioned itself as a top destination for leisure, adventure, and pilgrimage tourism, with growing interest in its natural beauty, mountaineering expeditions, and cultural heritage. With the continued support from markets like the US, India, and China, Nepal’s tourism industry is on track for further growth, promising a prosperous future for the sector.

In 2024, Nepal attracted a total of 1.15 million tourists, marking a notable 13% increase from the previous year. This surge is not only a sign of the sector’s recovery but also reflects the growing economic impact of tourism, with businesses in the sector becoming increasingly active. Tourism revenues have risen significantly, underscoring the sector’s contribution to Nepal’s economy.

A large portion of tourists, 60.4%, visit Nepal for leisure, recreation, and travel. Pilgrimage tourism represents 15.3%, while mountaineering and adventure activities account for 14.5%. Other purposes, including business and educational tourism, contribute the remaining 9.8%.

The economic benefits of the tourism sector are evident in the rise of revenue. In 2023, tourism revenue totaled NPR 72.45 billion, increasing by 15% to reach NPR 83.39 billion in 2024. This growth is fueled by both the increase in tourist arrivals and their expenditure patterns. In 2023, the average length of stay for tourists was 13.2 days, with a daily spending rate of USD 41. By 2024, this length of stay had increased marginally to 13.3 days, with daily spending averaging USD 40.8.

Mountaineering continues to be a major attraction for visitors. The number of expedition teams grew by 5.42% in 2024. However, the total number of individual climbers slightly declined, from 9,398 in 2023 to 9,191 in 2024, resulting in a decrease in mountaineering royalty revenue by 7.4%, dropping from NPR 999.3 million to NPR 925.8 million.

The infrastructure supporting Nepal’s growing tourism sector is expanding rapidly. By March 2025, the country had 214 five-star and deluxe hotels, a rise from 182 in the previous year. Additionally, the number of hotels catering to various market segments, including luxury boutique properties, increased from 1,234 to 1,364. The total number of beds in star-rated hotels grew by 3,270, reaching 20,343, while beds in tourist-standard and boutique accommodations increased by 5,202, bringing the total to 42,299.

Skilled labor in the tourism and hospitality sector has also grown. By March 2025, 28,233 individuals had been trained to support the tourism industry, reflecting the sector’s need for qualified professionals. The increase in the number of travel agencies, trekking agencies, and other services is also noteworthy. By mid-March 2025, Nepal had 4,963 registered travel agencies, 3,252 trekking agencies, and 97 packing agencies. The number of tourist transport services, tour guides, trekking guides, and river guides also saw substantial growth.

Nepal’s casino sector has experienced similar growth, with the number of operational casinos rising from 26 in mid-2024 to 29 in March 2025. This includes both traditional casinos and those operated with modern gaming equipment.

With these ongoing developments in infrastructure, skilled labor, and services, Nepal’s tourism industry is poised for continued growth, attracting more visitors and generating increasing revenue for the country.
