Dubbed “Paths of Pope Leo XIV,” the itinerary will take guests to the most important places associated with his life and priesthood in Peru.A Symbol of Faith and HopeThe tourist route was presented across four regions of Peru: Lambayeque, La Libertad, Piura and Callao. These areas held significant meaning in Pope Leo XIV’s life. In Lambayeque, President Boluarte described the route as more than just streets and churches. She emphasized its deeper meaning, noting that it represents life, memory, faith and hope. She referred to Pope Leo XIV by one of his popular titles, the Lord of Miracles and expressed that despite facing many challenges, the people of Peru continue to dream. She highlighted the pride that Peruvians feel in having a pope from their country.Pope Leo XIV’s Strong Peru TiesAn American citizen, Pope Leo XIV was naturalized as Peruvian in 2015 at the time of his appointment as bishop of Chiclayo. He called the city his “beloved diocese” and he often referred to it during public appearances. The Pope was reminded during the event that he has a deep link with Peru, recalling that the Pope has just renewed his Peruvian DNI (national identification document) evidencing a strong connection with the country.A Cultural and Religious RouteThe recently opened route is not just a pilgrimage of faith but an elaborate experience that unites culture, infrastructure, services, faith and local identity. The Ministra de Comercio Exterior y Turismo, Desilú León, said the aim is to develop tourism in the local area while highlighting the cultural inheritance of the areas.Key Destinations Along the RouteThe road passes through several destinations from four regions. In Lambayeque, 22 important tourist attractions have been established set in four circuits, promoting religious, cultural and natural inheritance. These are the St. Mary Cathedral, the Cross of Motupe, the Forest of Pómac and the Pimentel beach. History, religion and nature intersect in an experience that can’t be replicated in any other place. The way in Piura features 8 points among which are St. Joseph the Worker parish, the Holy Family Cathedral in Chulucanas and the town of La Encatada, for example. These places are even more poignant for Pope Leo XIV as he himself spent many years working in that area.Callao, another important location in the route, features four key sites: the “Mother Church,” St. Rose Parish, the diocesan chancery, and the Carmen de la Legua district. La Libertad, where Pope Leo XIV taught as a professor, showcases five locations, including St. Thomas of Villanova Convent and the Sts. Charles and Marcellus Major Seminary in Trujillo. The Pope’s History with PeruPope Leo XIV was first ordained as a priest in Chulucanas, Piura, Peru in 1985. He later moved to Trujillo, and he remained there for 11 years. He then served in Peru as apostolic administrator of Callao and as bishop of Chiclayo. His time and activities in these places combine to form a significant stake in his path that visitors can traverse, visiting the places defining his journey.Government Investment in Local DevelopmentThe Peruvian government has allocated 540 million soles, or about $151 million, to help develop the route in the first phase of the project. With these funds, the infrastructure will be strengthened, services will be improved and an image of hospitality will be presented to tourists. The project demonstrates the government’s priority for developing local communities through tourism and for honouring Peru’s cultural heritage.A Lasting LegacyFor Minister Desilú León, in a planet with more than 7 million people, only one is Pope Leo XIV and he comes to live in Peru. It is an effort to pay homage to him that can never fully measure up to the man, but we believe this tourist route to be our homage to his enduring contribution to the story of Peru and the world. This project allows Peru to honor the legacy of Pope Leo XIV and welcomes visitors who want to discover the country’s cultural and religious history. The venture should also generate new tourists for the country, showcasing Peru’s place on the Pope’s itinerary and instilling a sense of national pride.
