These initiatives are poised to provide a sustainable, time-efficient alternative for commuters traveling to the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport, cutting travel time by over 30 minutes compared to traditional routes.The Maharashtra government has officially commenced the Rs 190 crore Gateway of India-Radio Club marina project, with significant plans to roll out electric water taxis. This marks a pivotal move in reshaping Mumbai’s transport landscape and promises to revolutionize the way people travel to the new Navi Mumbai airport, a project expected to enhance regional connectivity and reduce reliance on road transport.The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has been entrusted with overseeing the operation of 15 electric boats along the Gateway of India–Elephanta Caves–Alibaug route. The total budget for this initiative is Rs 330 crore, with each boat priced at Rs 22 crore. The plan, designed by Kochi Water Metro, the project consultant, has already been submitted to MMB for approval. These electric boats are anticipated to offer a faster, greener alternative to traditional ferry services, playing a key role in the shift towards sustainable transportation options.The water taxi service is expected to launch by the end of the monsoon season, initially operating two vessels, each with a capacity of 30 passengers. These boats will be manufactured by Candella, a Swedish company renowned for its expertise in hydrofoil technology. Hydrofoil boats are equipped with computer-guided underwater hydrofoils that lift the hull out of the water, reducing drag and allowing the boats to achieve higher speeds while consuming less energy than conventional high-speed ferries. These vessels will operate at speeds ranging from 18 to 30 knots, offering a swift, smooth ride across Mumbai’s bustling waterfront.The development of the Gateway of India and Radio Club marinas is integral to the city’s ambitious plans to enhance its transport infrastructure. At present, approximately 30-35 lakh passengers annually travel from the jetties at Gateway of India to Elephanta, Alibaug, and Navi Mumbai. With demand steadily increasing, the new marinas are designed to handle over 2.5 lakh passengers per year, easing congestion at existing terminals and supporting the growing need for faster, more efficient transport options.The introduction of the water taxi service will be a game-changer for commuters heading to the Navi Mumbai airport. The quick 40-minute journey from South Mumbai to the airport will significantly cut travel time compared to road options, including the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), which is expected to take longer. This time-saving solution will make a noticeable difference for daily travelers, offering them a swift and comfortable alternative to road travel, which is often plagued by congestion and delays.In addition to reducing travel time, the electric water taxis will offer an eco-friendly travel option, cutting down on emissions and minimizing pollution.
